Dunmore East

Dunmore East - a truly unique village!

One of Ireland’s most charming fishing villages sits pretty on the mouth to Waterford Harbour.  It is tucked away amongst the many beautiful pebble and sandy coves on the South East coast, approximately 15 kilometres from Waterford City.  Between the beach at Counsellor’s strand at one end of the village, and the fishing harbour at the other end, there are several secluded coves and fascinating landmarks to explore.  A glance across the water will draw your eye to the Hook Penninsula and lighthouse.  The village resembles a secret garden – all is not revealed in the first glance!  The hills and valleys within it create a terraced-like village nestled beneath the cosy canopy of the beautiful woods that lie above it. These woods are mainly beech and display a carpet of bluebells in the late Spring and early Summer.  The roads wind through the village in a casual and relaxing way that coaxes the eye to gaze at the many lovely thatch cottages and gardens.  This special village is home to several excellent restaurants and hotels. In common with every Irish village, the lively pubs, offer food and a variety of music including traditional Irish music.

The river ferry at Passage East, just 6 kilometres to the east will take you across the estuary to the Hook Penninsula, where you can visit the ancestral home of the late John F. Kennedy and the surrounding park dedicated to his memory.  This is also a short-cut to the ferry port of Rosslare – it is approximately 1 hours drive to Rosslare via this route from Dunmore East.

The medevial city of Kilkenny, famous for its black marble, and hurling (an original Irish sport reputed to be the fastest ball game in the world) is approximately an hours drive from Dunmore East.

Fooood!!! &  Driiink!!!

This is undoubtedly one of the best places in Ireland to eat fish.  Why?  Because it’s fresh and delicious – straight from the sea.  Dunmore East has a reputation for excellent restaurants, a number of which are renowned far beyond the shores of Dunmore East.  The cuisine here caters for all types of palates from the sophisticated to the simpler tastes in food.  Children are also well catered for in the restaurants and after a day playing in the sand and soaking in the sea air, you’ll find they’ll eat and sleep better than they ever do at home! Smoking is no longer permitted in any of the restaurants, cafes, or pubs and as a result, we now have a new type of eaterie – outdoors, weather-permitting!  Quite a few of the restaurants and cafes have a view of the sea further adding to the pleasure of the dining experience here.
